Hot Specialty Retail Companies To Invest In Right Now

The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) still has ample room for improvement despite realizing many of the gains that it can accrue from its merchandising and supply initiatives. It's a big ship that isn't easy to turn. Plus, it has just started to feel the wind at its back from the housing recovery.

While Home Depot, the world's largest home improvement specialty retailer, is unlikely to change its goal of having 60 percent of its associates time dedicated to service hours and 40 percent to tasking, it could improve the productivity of these buckets.

Home Depot continues to strike the right balance between capitalizing on its current competitive advantages and investing to evolve with changing consumer preferences. The company's management team has a degree of pragmatism and self-awareness that has guided it well through the downturn and subsequent recovery.

Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.

They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vitacost.com's competitive position could be.

Shoppers flock to auto dealerships for year-end…

DETROIT — For both auto dealerships and car shoppers, December can be one of the best times of the year to get a good deal.

Just about every automaker has a special year-end sales event, and most will use it as they try to boost December's sales tally.

Chrysler is touting its Big Finish event, Ford is telling customers to Dream Big, Toyota has its Toyotathon sales event, and Hyundai is pushing its Sonata midsize sedan with Hyundai Holidays. Even BMW has its Happier New Year Event, to counter Mercedes-Benz's Winter Event.

For the past four years, automakers have sold more vehicles in December than any other month of the year.

"We've been looking for the last four to five months and, as far as pricing goes, right now it seems like this is the best time to buy," said Rich Torossian, 34, of Canton on a recent afternoon at Southfield Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram.

Torossian, who was trading in his white Chevrolet Silverado in favor of a black Ram Bighorn pickup, was just one of a flurry of customers in a dealership buzzing with activity about a week before Christmas.

In December 2012, the average incentive on a new car or truck hit $2,381 — the highest point of the year, according to Edmunds.com. Since then, incentives have continued to slowly but steadily creep upward. This year, December's incentives also are likely to again hit the highest point of the year.

"The sales will be as aggressive at the end of this month than probably at any time of the year, if not more so," said Bob Page, owner of Page Toyota in Southfield.

The average incentive numbers can be slightly deceiving, said Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst for Edmunds.com. That's because automakers in December sell a higher percentage of pickups than in other months. Pickups normally sell for a higher average price than cars, often with big incentives on them.

Manufacturers and auto dealers spent about 10% of their total ad dollars in December 2012, making it one of the biggest months for marketing! for the year, said Jon Swallen, chief research officer for Kantar Media.

"December is an above-average month for auto advertising, especially for the Dealer Association groups," Swallen said.

Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle said automakers increase incentives and boost advertising because consumers have more time to shop between Christmas and New Year's.

"There a lot of people that may make the decision to buy a new car … but they are not able to actually act upon it until they have some vacation time," said Merkle.

Also, truck sales are higher in December than other months because business owners take advantage of tax write-offs for equipment purchases.

Torossian said incentives on his new Ram, combined with a credit he got for turning in his Silverado before its lease expired, allowed him to cut his monthly payment from about $450 to $300.

Across town, at Suburban Buick in Troy, Bob Breitman was shopping for a new Buick LaCrosse. There is nothing wrong with his 2011 LaCrosse, but he came into the dealership because of the special holiday deals. Last week, General Motors began adding an additional $500 off of three models — Enclave, LaCrosse and Regal.

"If the deals are not good enough, I am going to keep my car," Breitman said. "It is really that simple."

At Page Toyota, Kamal Gupta of Bloomfield Hills bought his daughter a black Toyota Camry Hybrid for about $30,000 as a Christmas gift.

"She is now working as a doctor, and I wanted to give her a present," Gupta said. "I am very proud of her."

Even with the year-end frenzy, automakers will have a hard time topping last year's December sales. That's because incentives were higher than usual in November.

In addition, a number of snowstorms and colder than average weather may also freeze customers out of the car shopping mood.

TrueCar.com, an automotive pricing website, predicts December sales will top 1.4 million new vehicles. That would be a 4% increase over last December, but! less tha! n the 1.5 million sales in August, when Labor Day weekend started at the end of the month.

But in certain segments, especially at the luxury end, bragging rights are at stake.

For example, Mercedes-Benz had a 7,610 edge over BMW through November to be the nation's best-selling luxury brand. BMW is offering a a holiday credit of up to $4,500 on select 2013 models and up to $2,000 on select 2014 models.

Meanwhile, Chevrolet has sold 75,552 Camaros, putting it 4,093 ahead of the Ford Mustang for the year.

"Auto geeks are rejoicing when you get to this time of the year," said Jeff Schuster, vice president of forecasting for LMC Automotive.

4 Ways Inflation Still Threatens Your Finances

Gas PricesGetty Images Inflation hasn't been a major problem in the United States for years. According to government figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the inflation rate bottomed out near zero percent in 2008 and has risen at a modest 1.5 to 3 percent pace ever since. Overall, inflation has risen a total of about 27 percent over the past 10 years -- which may sound like a lot, but it isn't, and for the health of the whole economy, some inflation is essential. Still, for millions of Americans, making ends meet just seems to get harder and harder. Looking at the prices many people have paid for vital products and services over the years is an eye-opening lesson on why even low inflation poses a financial threat for many households. 1. Gasoline: Up 121 percent Gasoline prices are one of the most visible indicators of inflation, and prices at the pump have risen a lot further than the overall inflation rate. Since 2003, when gas prices were around $1.59 per gallon , what you pay for a gallon of gasoline has more than doubled to $3.52, according to figures from the Department of Energy and AAA. Some drivers have been able to offset the increase by switching to more fuel-efficient cars. But typical drivers using 550 gallons of gasoline every year are spending more than $1,000 more annually than they did 10 years ago just to keep their cars fueled up. 2. Milk: Up 29 percent Milk prices haven't gone up nearly as much as gasoline, although they've outpaced overall inflation by a small margin. In 2003 milk cost about $2.67 per gallon, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and they've risen to $3.45 as of August. Interestingly, those price hikes have come despite a reduction in demand for milk among consumers. Between 2003 and late 2012, milk consumption dropped by about 2 percent. Yet milk production has continued to climb, making the price increase curious in light of typical supply and-demand relationships that would suggest lower prices. 3. College Costs: Up 61 percent The price of higher education has increased at a rate more than twice that of overall inflation. According to the College Board's Independent College 500 Index, what cost $28,277 in the 2003-04 academic year have risen to $45,644 for the 2013-14 year. These costs include tuition, fees, and room and board. But even students who choose to live at home have still faced substantial price increases: Tuition and fees make up about three-quarters of the total cost for the current academic year. For many, these figures understate the long-term costs of education. Students who take out loans to finance their education end up paying additional interest and fees, increasing their total costs substantially. If interest rates start to rise, these secondary costs will only add to the burden of students and graduates. 4. Health Care: Up 81 percent Health care in America is notoriously expensive, and the prices have only kept rising. The rate of spending on health care has tripled the overall rate of inflation, according to the 10 most recent years of data available from the Department of Health and Human Services. In recent years, health care spending increases have slowed, with figures coming in around the 4 percent range in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Some of that slowing, however, comes from people choosing not to spend as much on health care, rather than from smaller price increases. Why Saving Isn't Enough You might think a bank account is a safe places to preserve your money, it does nothing to protect you against the slow but steady erosion in what that money can buy. With actual prices you pay on many items outpacing the official inflation rate, you need to consider ways to earn more on your money in order to keep up with the cost of living. Best Prefered Stocks To Invest In Right Now

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Transocean Deepwater Drilling Corp. has lost a round in its fight to avoid handing over documents to a government board investigating the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.

Transocean is appealing a federal court order enforcing a subpoena of the documents by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday refused to stay the document handover while the appeal is pending.

"We are extremely pleased with the court's decision," said Dr. Daniel Horowitz, CSB's managing director. "After years of litigation, it paves the way for the CSB to finally conclude its Deepwater investigation, which we believe holds lessons for all the energy industry."

The documents were collected by a Transocean internal investigation team.

The 5th Circuit said Transocean failed to justify action that would delay the safety board's report on the explosion, which killed 11 and spawned the nation's worst offshore oil spill.

One under-$10 technology player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is ParkerVision (PRKR), which designs, develops and markets its proprietary radio frequency technologies and products for use in semiconductor circuits for wireless communication products. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 105%.

If you take a look at the chart for ParkerVision, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last month, with shares soaring higher from its low of $2.38 to its recent high of $4.29 a share. During that uptrend, shares of PRKR have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed share of PRKR back above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Shares of PRKR have now moved within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PRKR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.29 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 2.51 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PRKR will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from late October that started at $7.50 a share. Some possible upside targets if PRKR gets into that gap down zone with volume are $5 to $6 a share.

Traders can look to buy PRKR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 200-day moving average of $3.90 a share, or near its 50-day moving average of $3.56 a share. One can also buy PRKR off strength once it takes out $4.29 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).

I hate to be the one to say I told you so, but, I told you so. It's Vringo, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRNG) all over again. What's that? The euphoria - the certainty - that drove ParkerVision, Inc. PRKR plunged to a close of $2.90 on the 8th day (yesterday) when the gamble didn't pan out for speculators who were sure it would. Although China and India produce plenty of their own black gold, Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) makes a pretty penny off of domestic production and coal exports to those two countries. The company is the leading exporter to China and India from its U.S. and Australian operations, and is setting itself up for significant growth opportunities.

Yes, there are still more than two hours left in the day, but it’s New Year’s Eve and unless something crazy happens these five stocks look to be the worst of the worst in the S&P 500 in 2013. So let’s raise a big hand for Newmont Mining (NEM), Cliff’s Natural Resources (CLF) Edwards Lifesciences (EW), Peabody Energy (BTU) and Teradata (TDC).

A major reason that basic materials companies weren't up to par today stems from the concerns coming out of China. Not only are interest rates on the rise, but Goldman Sachslowered its estimates on the country's growth today. China, as a major energy consumer, holds huge sway over companies like Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) that not only mine and market coal but act as brokerages for the resource as well. Accordingly, Peabody shares fell 7.2% on Monday.

EMCORE (EMKR), together with its subsidiaries, provides compound semiconductor-based products for the broadband, fiber optics, satellite, and solar power markets. This stock closed up 1% to $4.09 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $4.00-$4.14
    52-Week Range: $3.50-$5.62
    Tuesday's Volume: 187,000
    Three-Month Average Volume: 103,744

From a technical perspective, EMKR trended modestly higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $4.03 with above-average volume. This stock has been making higher lows over the last three months each time it has pulled back, which is a bullish technical sign. This spike to the upside on Tuesday is starting to push shares of EMKR within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if EMRK manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.16 to $4.20 and then above $4.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EMKR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.90 to $3.86 or above more support at $3.78 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 103,744 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then EMKR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.53 to its 200-day moving average of $4.65, or even $5 to $5.30.

Top 10 Diversified Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now

There's a question no one wants to ask, but it's time we do:

What happens to the U.S. economy if American consumers get so financially strapped that they stop spending money?

You see, it's a well-known fact that 70% of the U.S economy depends on consumer spending. If consumer spending slips, it will weaken the U.S. economy, which means lower earnings - and lower stock prices.

And the household income trends that I'm about to show you suggest that this vital pillar of the U.S economy has some serious cracks in it...

The Dangerous Trend in Median Household Income

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, median household income - the level where exactly half take in more and half take in less - fell 0.2% in 2012 to an inflation-adjusted $51,017. And that's 8.3% lower than where the median household income stood in 2007, before the recession began.

What increases Americans have gotten over the years - about $11,000 since 2000 - have been more than negated by inflation.

The decline for 2012 puts inflation-adjusted median household income at a level not seen since the mid-1990s. In fact, a long-term chart of median income shows that families made less in 2012 than they did in 1989.

The ASF (R) 165 will also be available for its new customers, targeting the LED and industrial markets. The production is in progress in the Arizona plant in the U.S. with a production furnace capable of producing high-quality 165 kilogram boules in high volume. The ASF 165 will definitely give its customers a competitive advantage and lower cost of ownership, by providing a sapphire furnace that will significantly increase capacity and reduce costs as it provides 40% increase in Boule size compared to the current ASF 115. In addition, the company is anticipating strong demand for this product category in the coming months.

As the company witnessed weakness in the sapphire segment, it is now focused on improving this segment to make it competitive. In line with this strategy, GT has announced that it is making its next generation ASF(R)165 sapphire growth furnace for producing high volume and high-quality sapphire material, which will be commercially available this year. This move by GT in the sapphire segment will help it tap new markets as the new system will deliver a 40% increase in boule size as compared to older versions of ASF115. This will also help in extending GT's leadership position as a provider of low-cost high-quality sapphire production tools.

Small cap solar stock Andalay Solar Inc (OTCMKTS: WEST) has largely cratered for investorsverses solar stock peers Real Goods Solar, Inc (NASDAQ: RSOL) and SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY), but is the company finally turning itself around after a failed deal to be acquired?

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

There's no denying that LDK Solar Co., Ltd (NYSE:LDK) has been a notable laggard this year compared to performances from First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL). RSOL is up nearly 180% year-to-date, with a decent chunk of that gain unfurling in just the last couple of months. FSLR is up 25% for the year so far, though that more modest gain would have been much bigger had it not been for February's 24% plunge. Meanwhile, LDK shares are down 22% year-to-date, and have barely even blipped despite the fact that solar energy has become all the rage again in recent months.

Last Thursday when I suggested American Community (OTCMKTS:ACYD) was a stock that should be shed immediately, and replaced with a position in Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL), I didn't win a lot of friends. After all, ACYD was the market's newest darling, in the middle of a red-hot runup, while RSOL was "just another solar name" that happened to be lucky enough to stumble its way above a key support line. Well, I hate to be the one to day I told you so, but, I told you so. American Community shares are down 35% since then, while Real Goods Solar shares are up 36% in the meantime. Both stocks seem pretty well entrenched in their current trends too.

Prem Watsa is renowned for his long track record of outstanding returns using Buffett-style value investing through his worldwide insurance and reinsurance company, Toronto-based Fairfax Financial Holdings. His five-year cumulative is 176.4%, compared to 12.2% for the S&P 500. Most recently, he made headlines for making a large contrarian bet on Research In Motion (RIMM) and joining its board in his first activist investing foray. In the fourth quarter, he added to this position. He also added to his positions in Citigroup Inc. (C), Old Republic Corp. (ORI) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and dramatically reduced one of his largest holdings, Dell (DELL). As a Ben Graham devotee, Watsa looks past short-term fluctuations in price to the underlying strength of a business. His stance on the economy, as of September and October 2011, was that he believed the U.S. was showing Depression-level interest rates and deficits, but he still liked some stocks and would hedge his exposure, he told CFA Institute Magazine.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at EnerSys (NYSE: ENS  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is EnerSys doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, OK, it seems. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 0.3%, and inventory decreased 2.2%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue dropped 3.5%, and inventory shrank 2.2%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks healthy. Revenue grew 2.7%, and inventory dropped 6.9%.

It’s never a good sign when a top executive leaves a company citing “family reasons,” and that just happens to be the excuse given for CFO Jeff Edwards’ departure from Allergan (AGN) today. But Citigroup’s Liav Abraham says not to worry–especially as it regards Valeant Pharmaceuticals’ (VRX) hostile bid. Sometimes family reasons are just family reasons:

Large cap serial acquirerValeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (NYSE: VRX) is teaming up with activist investorBill Ackman to pursue large cap Botox maker Allergan, Inc (NYSE: AGN), but stocks like Cutera, Inc (NASDAQ: CUTR), Cynosure, Inc (NASDAQ: CYNO), PhotoMedex Inc (NASDAQ: PHMD) and Syneron Medical Ltd (NASDAQ: ELOS)actually offer investors more exposure to the growing anti aging and aesthetics market (Note: See my recent article: These Small Caps Seek to Treat Your Crow Feet and Double Chin (RVNC & KYTH)). And just for the record, theme-based buyout speculation doesn’t improve your chances of picking an acquisition target. Back in 2012 after Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) bought Amylin for control of its diabetes pipeline following the purchase of Neighborhood Diabetes by Insulet (PODD), pundits were sure it would spark a wave of other diabetes-driven acquisitions. Those other M&A candidates began getting bid up, but as it turns out, no more meaningful buyouts materialized in the diabetes space.
