Hot Information Technology Companies To Own For 2014

The U.S. Department of Defense wrapped up the workweek Friday with the announcement of nine new contracts, worth more than $791 million in total. One single contract, however, accounted for fully 62% of the funds on offer.

The winners of that contract, a $494 million firm-fixed-price, multiple-award, task-order contract for the supply of hardware, software, and related integration services needed for the U.S. Army's "Information Technology Enterprise Solution-2" (ITES-2S) enterprise business systems project, include:

Dell's (NASDAQ: DELL  ) Federal Systems business International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM  ) And four privately owned companies -- Unicom Government, CDW Government, Iron Bow Technologies, and World Wide Technology.

The specific type of contract being awarded is best described as an "umbrella" contract, setting a maximum amount of funds that can be spent (the $494 million). Dell, IBM, and the other contract winners will now need to bid against each other to sell the Army equipment and software in response to specific task orders, up until said ceiling value has been reached.

Elsewhere, similar market reactions could were seen after last week's monetary policy meeting at the European Central Bank [ECB]. The ECB also did little to signal changes to its own stimulus programs, which was not a total surprise, given the fact that the bank reduced interest rates by 25 basis points to new all-time lows at 0.75% at last month's meeting. The main potential for surprise, however, came from the possibility that the central bank would announce the implementation of negative interest rates (the rate paid to commercial banks when holding money). Since this would have been a bearish outcome for the EUR/USD, markets have since bought the Euro, pushing the CurrencyShares Euro Trust ETF (FXE) higher.

    Clean Harbors (NYSE: CLH  )
I love finding companies that fly under the radar, and Clean Harbors is one. It's a smaller company with a market cap of just over $3 billion. But with its founder Alan McKim steering the ship as CEO, I think there is plenty of room for this company to grow. Oh yeah, did I also mention McKim owns almost 8% of shares outstanding? I love founder/leaders like McKim (and Bezos) who eat their own cooking.

Another stock that looks poised to trigger a near-term breakout trade is Seanergy Maritime (SHIP), which provides transportation solutions in the dry bulk shipping sector through its vessel-owning subsidiaries for a range of dry bulk cargoes, including coal, iron ore, and grains, bauxite, phosphate and steel products. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 63%.

If you take a look at the chart for Seanergy Maritime, you'll notice that this stock has just started to spike back above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages with above-average volume. In fact, volume for SHIP over the last few weeks has been showing bullish flows as the stock has flirted with those key moving averages. This move is quickly pushing shares of SHIP within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SHIP if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action 12,297 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SHIP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.06 to $2.09 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $2.19 to its 52-week high at $2.71 into range for shares of SHIP.

Traders can look to buy SHIP off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $1.44 a share. One could also buy SHIP off strength once it takes out $1.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
